I love laughing, dancing, exploring, being outside, asking questions, coffee, steak, listening, talking, coaching, working out, enjoying time with friends and family, and reading. I love learning about the body, and how amazing the Lord has made us all so uniquely and beautiful in His image. I get WAY too excited about the littlest things. I love shaking up traditional settings and bringing people out of their comfort zone. I feel like I have a unique way of looking at things and seeing past the surface. I love learning about people and what makes them tick, what makes them smile and what inspires them.
I have a mom and dad who live in Oklahoma. I grew up in the country, on land with horses and cattle. I know a thing or two about country living — lifting heavy things, helping dad move hay bales, feeding horses and cattle. I used my imagination to entertain myself because we lived too far out to have friends over all the time (in other words I spent my spare time bossing my little sister around haha).
All of my life I was in sports (literally, I tried them all). I loved it, but I never stuck with anything long enough to be great at it. Back then I didn’t consider myself “competitive” — now, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Because I was a decent enough athlete I was able to keep up with the good athletes, but I didn’t “look” like them. Until about six years ago, I struggled with body image and diets. Throughout high school and college I would binge eat and run to maintain the balance — it didn't work. I really wrecked my metabolism and was very unkind to my body but I never understood why I didn't look like everyone else even though I was decent enough to keep up in sports.
I got to college and the unhealthy body cycle didn’t stop, in fact, it got worse. I started running half marathons without training, irregular eating habits, starving myself and then binge eating, trying diet pills — you name it, I tried it. I tried to act like it didn’t affect me, that I was happy, and that I was still healthy despite what I looked like. But I wasn’t, I was just hiding it all. My senior year in college I started P90X (you can laugh) with some friends — that kind of sparked a “phase” of health in me — and it was community based which I loved.
However, It wasn’t until (against my will) I tried CrossFit in 2014. I had an amazing and compassionate friend, Josh Hedrick (also a coach, the same person who got me into P90X) who talked me into trying CrossFit — he said that if I tried it and hated it he would shut up about it, but that I just needed to give it a try. I am SURE you can guess what happened next… I tried it. I loved it. Within 3 months I was competing and within the following 3 months I was certified to be a CrossFit coach. After I began competing, I realized that starving and binge eating wasn’t going to cut it if I was going to perform to the best of my ability. I jumped RIGHT into nutrition — I spent the next year (and beyond) “geeking” out about it, how it works, how our bodies are made, and how to fuel it for sport and performance.
In 2014, the year I started CrossFit, I graduated with a degree I would never use. As I said earlier, I got into competing and coaching crossfit, and the following year I was blessed with a job with the University of Arkansas Athletic Department. I spent almost two years helping manage the Jerry and Gene Jones Student Athlete Success Center. At this job I got the privilege to speak with countless student athletes about their sport, mental game, dreams, hopes and disappointments. Over time, I gained a few training and nutrition clients since I first started coaching in 2015. During my time in the athletic department I began to envision and dream about what I wanted to do as a career, what I loved doing, what I was good at doing and how to build a foundation in athletics, both at a youth and collegiate level. I began studying for a year (because I had a political science degree not a kinesiology degree) to sit for the CSCS exam (certified strength and conditioning specialist) I took it and passed the first time. I was inspired and decided at the time that I needed to go back to school for kinesiology and possibly Physical Therapy. However, because my first degree had zero science I had to start over, so I did. I gave my resignation notice at JSAC and began making preparations to go back to school full time.
In 2017, I began my second degree and in that same year I started Kokoro Sports Performance. Since then, I have been personal coaching in nutrition, movement, and CrossFit. Over time I completed my second degree as well as many other education credentials, certifications, and professional experiences.
I am excited to share that my most recent endeavor and growth at Kokoro Sports Performance has led me to the New England School of Acupuncture at MCPHS in Worcester, MA to pursue my Doctorate in Chinese Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture. I am excited to add this wealth of knowledge to my tool kit as I continue to serve and empower people to live their best and most whole lives.
